Dear Gobble,

I am extremely delighted to know that you have been selected as a salesman at the Malacca Cement Co. This is an opportunity for a young man like you to stand on his own feet and learn how to deal with people in general and customers in particular.

You have asked me for advice on how to proceed. As you know, your main task will be to win the goodwill and customers for your company. You must argue your case convincingly to bring out the merits of your company. Do not exaggerate because clients can see through this. Say how in a practical way the client is gaining by buying from you. Probably you are the only company paying for the transport or something like the sort.

Your experience as you go along will teach you the permutations of human dealings. There is also a fine book which might be exploited-Dale Carnegie’s How to win friends and succeed in Life. But no advice or book can do what the job of learning does.
