Unity is Strength.

Unity is Strength.

Uneasy lays the head that wears the crown.

This proverb explains that the person who wears the crown feels very uneasy because has to be liable for all responsibilities, to face the difficulties and has to remove them. Though he wears the decorated crown, he is worried by the countless problems and anxieties. While ordinary people are carefree and mentally peaceful and at ease, they are always uneasy. Only the wearer knows how uneasy he feels on wearing the crown. This is because the crown carries the responsibilities of proper governance and the expectations of a very large number of people and it is very hard to satisfy all the expectations of the people. In fact the crown symbolizes the responsibilities laid over a man which he is expected to fulfill.

Francis Bacon says that Men in great places are thrice servants - servants of the state, servants of fame and servants of business. So men in power are not happy because of countless anxieties and problems. There is a story beyond the origin of this proverb. Once in the Middle East country there was a king who was very popular among his subjects and he was liked by all his country men. But one of his ministers was always jealous of him. He wanted to rule the kingdom on his own. The King came to know of this and he wanted to teach his minister a lesson. He called the Minister and asked him to rule the country for a week. The minister was very happy and so he organized a dinner. On the day of the dinner the minister sat at the kings table and started to eat. There he found a sword suspended above his head by a very thin piece of hair. The minister was very nervous and he could enjoy the dinner. By the end of the dinner he gave the crown back to the king and said that now he understood the difficulties in ruling the country.

Unity is Strength.

This proverb indicates the importance of working in a group. There are a lot of sayings and proverbs like…

Two men with the same thought can turn clay into gold.
Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil.

For if they fall, one will lift up the other. But woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help.

The Story of the lion and the four bulls is a good example of this proverb. The lion could not kill the four bulls when they stood united. But after sometime the fox sowed the seeds of discord and the bulls started fighting between themselves. They started going separately for grazing and the lion learned about this and hunted all of them one by one. There is another story where an old man in his death bed wanted to indicate the importance of unity to his sons. He called them and gave them one stick to each and asked them to break them which they could do easily. He then gave them a bundle of sticks tied up together and asked them to break it. But they could not do it. He thus indicated that even sticks are united they could not be broken and thus showed them the importance of unity to his sons.
