United Nations Member States

The United Nations is a voluntary organization.

The United Nations is a voluntary organisation of sovereign states. It does not make laws which nations must accept. But it is a forum were representatives of most countries of the world big and small, rich and poor, following different political systems - express freely their views on world issues. The United Nations effectiveness depends on the cooperation of Member States. Its influence derives from the force of the values it represents.


Membership of The United Nations

Membership of the UN is open to all peace-loving countries which accept the obligations of the Charter and are adjudged by the Organisation to be able and willing to carryout these obligations. It has 193 members as on 01 December - 2014.

Montenegro became an independent European Nation in May 2006 marking one of the final acts of the dissolution of the old Yugoslavia. The people of Montenegro in a referendum in May 2006, voted to separate from Serria and became an independent nation.

Montenegro became 192nd member of United Nations. It succeeded from erstwhile Serbia and Montenegro which had become the member of United Nations as 189th member in 2007.
