Even Monkeys Fall from Trees.
Even Monkeys Fall from Trees.
Epigrams succeed where epics fail.
An epic is a very long narrative poem consisting of heroic adventures of a person or a group of people. Mahabharata and Ramayana are two famous epics which gives the complete story of Pandavas and Rama. Similarly the Greek poems Iliad and Odyssey are also two great epics.
In an epic even a small thing is narrated in a very circuitous and long way. Short and succinct way of saying also has its own advantage in that it consumes very less amount of time and it is very easy to understand and appreciate, it is also not time consuming.
An epigram is a complete opposite of the word epic where a concise short statement used to express a point and show the importance of certain thing. A haiku which is a small poem consisting of a few lines is also a short and powerful method of conveying something. There are situations where a large number of words may not succeed…but a few words succeed.
The ancient poetry in many languages does not reach the common man because they are very long and circuitous and people do not have the time and patience to read or listen them. But the modem poetry and the couplets like haiku are easy to understand and do not much effort. The reason THIRUKURAL written by the poet THIRUVALLUVAR is very famous. Because it conveys in two sentences what great epics do in thousand of pages.
This is because what we say is always more important than how much we say. So the success of a speech does not depend on the length of the speech but on the impact delivered by each word in the speech.
Even Monkeys Fall from Trees.
This is a Japanese proverb also called as kotowaza. Like other kotowaza it talks about animals. Saru is the word for monkeys in Japanese and it has us reevaluate our take on these skilful tree climbers of the jungle - monkeys. They are coordinated physically and are well suited to a life of trees proving that they are skilful animals when it comes to climbing and swinging around on the branches of trees. But sometimes these monkeys while playing with on the tree slip and fall down.
Everybody makes mistakes. Nobody is perfect. Even the monkeys themselves on occasion have been spotted to fall from trees. Even the greatest of mortals and demi-gods like Hercules, Achilles and Samson, all possessed a particular vulnerability, weakness or tragic flaw. But as this proverb points out even these great semi-mortal men had flaws and were not perfect in every way - Even Monkeys Fall from Trees.
This is also illustrated in the saying however much we try perfection is always one step ahead of us. The meaning of this proverb should not be taken in a negative sense. But it should be taken in the view that we have to continue working and try to improve ourselves in our work. So however good we are in our work we should never satisfied with our achievement and try to achieve perfection.
