What is the difference between Comprise and Consist? :
Comprise : (verb)
(
1 ) Be made up of
Have as parts or members
The committee comprises people of widely differing views.
(
2 ) Be the parts or members of something
Ten small boys and a dog comprised the street entertainer’s audience.
Consist : (verb)
(
1 ) Be composed of something
The committee consists of seven members.
(
2 ) COMPRISE and CONSIST means one the same thing. CONSIST, when used in the said sense, is always followed by the preposition OF.
(
3 ) On the other hand, COMPRISE is not followed by OF.
(
4 ) Let us observe the following two examples.
(
5 ) The Indian Parliament consists of The President, The Rajya Sabha and The Lok Sabha.
The Indian Parliament comprises The President, The Rajya Sabha and The Lok Sabha.
(
6 ) The expression CONSIST IN means …have something as its chief or only element or feature.
(
7 ) The beauty of the plan consists in its simplicity.
The happiness of a country consists in the freedom of its citizens.
