Problem Solving
These sample questions have been taken from the old GMAT question papers. Answer each question yourself before reading the analysis that follows each question. In traveling from a dormitory to a certain city, a student went 1/5 of the way by foot, 2/3 of the way by bus, and the remaining 8 kilometers by car. What is the distance, in kilometers, from the dormitory to the city? (A) 30 (B) 45 (C) 60 (D) 90 (E) 120 [1/5] + [2/3] = [3 + 10]/15 = 13/15. Therefore, the distance of 8 kilometers traveled by car must have been 2/15th of the distance. Therefore the total distance must be 8* [15/2] = 60 kms. So, the answer is (C).
