How do you pronounce the word manoeuvre?

The
a in the first syllable and the e in the final syllable are like the a in China, about and around. The oeu is pronounced like the oo in cool, pool and school. The final r is silent. The stress is on the second syllable. The Americans spell the word maneuver.

This word manoeuvre can be used either as a verb or a noun. When you manoeuvre something, you move or turn something very skillfully.

For example:

• The soldier manoeuvred the tank through the giant trees.

The word does have a negative meaning. However when you manoeuvre someone into doing something or manoeuvre someone out of something, you use clever, but often illegal methods to get what you want.

• The election results were achieved through a series of political manoeuvres.
