How Plurals are formed? :


A Noun that denotes one person or thing is said to be in the Singular.

Example : Cow, Book, Tree, Girl, Boy



A Noun that denotes more than one person or thing is said to be in the Plural.

Example : Cows, Books, Trees, Girls, Boys



How Plurals are formed?

1. The Plural of nouns is generally formed by adding –s to the singular.
   
   Examples :
   
   Pens
   
   Birds
   
   Books
   
   Trees
   
   Girls
   
   
   
2. But Nouns, ending in –s, -sh, -ch (soft) or –x, form the plural by adding –es to the singular.
   
   Examples :
   
   Bus – buses
   
   Fish-fishes
   
   Bench – benches
   
   Box – boxes
   
   
   
3. Nouns ending in –y, preceded by a consonant, form their plural by changing –y into –i and adding –es.
   
   Examples :
   
   Baby - babies
   
   Story - stories
   
   Lorry - Lorries
   
   
   
4. Most Nouns ending in –o also form the plural by adding –es to the singular.
   
   Examples :
   
   Buffalo – buffaloes
   
   Mango – mangoes
   
   Hero –heroes
   
   Negro –negroes
   
   Cargo – cargoes
   
   Echo – echoes
   
   
   
5. A few nouns ending in –o merely add –s.
   
   Examples :
   
   Dynamo – dynamos
   
   Solo – solos
   
   Ratio –ratios
   
   Stereo – stereos
