-
And almost everyone when age,
Disease or sorrows strike him,
Inclines to think there is a God,
Or something very like Him.
(Arthur Hugh Clough : 1819-1861)
-
Look not for Brahma and the beginning there
Nor Him nor any light
Shall any gazer see with mortal eyes,
Or any searcher know by mortal mind;
Veil after veil will lift -- but there must be
Veil upon veil behind
Stars sweep and question not, this is enough
That life and death and joy and woe abide.
(Edwin Amold : The Light of Asia : On the Buddha's concept of God)

Samuel F. B. Morse (1791-1872) who invented an instrument for sending messages had lost all hope of getting the support of the government to build a telegraph line. He was leaving New York under the impression that his proposal had been vetoed by the Senate. Just then Miss Annie G. Ellsworth, daughter of the Commissioner of Patents arrived and congratulated him with the news that his scheme was approved. "You shall send the first message over that telegraph line when it is opened," exclaimed Morse.
On May 24, 1844 the line was opened. Miss Ellsworth handed to Morse who was sitting at a sending instrument in the Supreme Court Room of the Capitol Building, a paper on which was written "What God hath wrought." Morse ticked the words over the wires to Baltimore where Alfred Vail, his partner received them and in a few moments ticked them back. The telegraph had come into its own.
(Marion Florence Lansing : Science Through the Ages)

If this is the way God wants it to be…
This is the way I want it.
(Tom Booley)
-
Lead, Kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead thou me on.
The night is dark and I am far from home,
Lead thou me on.
(Cardinal Newman : 1801-1890)
-
When a catastrophe
Wipes you out
And nothing remains
But God and you
God is visiting you.
When your language
Is stripped naked
Never to be clothed
In falsehood again
Be sure
God is visiting you.
When you are robbed
Of the whole world
And your voice
Becomes eloquent
Be sure
God is visiting you.
(St. Tukaram : 17th century : Translated from Marathi by Dilip Chitre entitled Says Fuka)
