Different Compounds and Their Properties
To observe the different properties of different substances, take some sugar, salt, chalk powder and some talcum powder in different pieces of paper. Taste the four powders with the tip of your tongue. You will see that you get different taste for each of them. Take water in four small jars. Put each powder in different jar and see what happens.
You will find that sugar and salt do dissolve a bit. But the others two do not dissolve. Now pour a little vinegar into the jars and see the reactions. There will be bubbling in the jar with chalk powder, while both sugar and salt will dissolve completely and disappear. You can try this experiment using other substances.
An Acid-Alkali Reaction
Take some sodium bicarbonate in a spoon. This is an alkaline compound. Add some vinegar to it. Vinegar is actually dilute acetic acid.
You will immediately see the mixture reacting and bubbles coming out. The gas coming out is carbon dioxide.
