Science Projects IndexChecking Wind Speed
Requirements : Piece of cork, small knitting needles and four yogurts cups.
Make a hole through the centre of cork piece. Insert the needles through the sides of yogurt cups and fix them around the cork in a way that all cups face the same direction. Now place two metal washers on a small fence post. Insert the nail through the centre of cork and the washers on the post. Thus an anemometer is formed which rotates with a speed corresponding the wind velocity.
Checking Wind Direction
Take a sheet of card and cut out a circle and a pointer from it. Divide the circle in four equal parts. Making lines with a pencil on the circumference mark N, S, E and W on the dividing lines. Make a hole in the centre. Tape the pointer to a long nail. Now take a plastic conduit pipe sealed at one end and fix it on a wooden post in the garden where it is windy. Insert the circle through the pipe checking the directions on the card with a compass. Lastly insert the nail inside the pipe. The pointer will indicate the direction of wind.
