Meaning:

A training program designed to provide an inexperienced person basic knowledge, usually military.


Example:

At most restaurants, bussing tables acts as a sort of
boot camp for would be waiters.


Origin:

During the Spanish-American War sailors wore leggings called boots. The term
boot came to mean a Navy (or Marine) recruit. These recruits trained in boot camps.
